The Right Care, Right Person (RCRP) initiative began in Humberside, and was subsequently supported by the UK Home Office as meriting introduction across England and Wales. In this latest video in a PolicingTV series on RCRP, Humberside Police’s Chief Superintendent Tracy Bradley and Contact Officer Hendrik James provide insights from the Force Control Room.

“When people call initially, they just want help. And I don’t think that they are aware of the services out there that are available to them.”

“They are just looking for a way to relieve the pressure on either themselves, or that family member.”

“You’ve been trained in Right Care, Right Person. Just talk me through how that training came about, and your thoughts about the quality of training…”

“When we receive a call for mental health issues, we have a toolkit that we use.”

“Generally speaking, if somebody’s in a mental health crisis, the ideal agency to deal with it would be the ambulance, because they do have medical training. Where responding officers and people like myself have training in terms of immediate, life-saving techniques, we’re not equipped in the sense of dealing with someone that has complex mental health needs – which is where Right Care, Right Person comes in.”
