The Right Care, Right Person (RCRP) initiative began in Humberside, and was subsequently supported by the UK Home Office as meriting introduction across England and Wales. In the second video in a PolicingTV series on RCRP, Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Jonathan Evison, speaks to PolicingTV’s Bernard Rix about the initiative.

“Initially my concerns were very much that, while it [RCMP} could work in the Humber region, because the Humber region is quite compact… to translate that to a more metropolitan area might prove very difficult. It was obvious to me that you would need government support – the Police Minister, the Home Secretary and the Health Secretary as well. So I had early feelers out to the then Police Minister, who was Kit Malthouse, about that”.

The local Health Trusts “could see the benefit, they absolutely accepted that sending police to somebody in a mental health crisis was not the best of things to do”.

“As soon as it was launched, it was obvious that things were going to improve”.

“It’s not a magic bullet. It’s about twenty magic bullets”.

“It’s a very, very good place to be a Police and Crime Commissioner, I’ve got to say. I’ve got a great pride [in the force and region]… People who have roots in the area have a sense of pride but also a sense of responsibility”.

“I’m very proud that we’ve been able to do this in Humberside, but I’m also very aware that we’re not there yet… We’ve still got lots to do”.
