Dr Gareth Stubbs served for eighteen years as a British police officer before moving to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, to become a policing and security lecturer at Rabdan Academy.  In this second of three videos for PolicingTV, Gareth explains a little about the work of Rabdan Academy in Abu Dhabi, which focuses the education it provides, to students from the UAE and across the wider Gulf region, on policing, security and defence. The faculty has former officers from around the world, together offering huge international experience and insights for the student cadre

Gareth explains what motivated him to leave policing in the UK, accompanied by his family, to embark on an academic career in Abu Dhabi. He also discusses the UK’s police officer entry requirements, including the Police Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF), as well as his work on “social embeddedness”, including how that impacts on diversity – of officer, and of thought. He invites those in jurisdictions from around the world that are struggling with diversity to get in touch, for more detail on the learning from his research, as well as to explore whether that research might usefully add additional jurisdictions and cultures.
