Episode 1 : Scale, Impact and Establishing a Will to Change

Recorded 11 January 2022

This is the first episode of six ground-breaking expert panel discussions that explore the scale and impact of male violence within policing and which draw on a range of internal and external specialists.

The session focused on the scale, prevalence and impact of male violence to understand the police service’s commitment and will to change. It explored police culture, values and barriers to reform and considered whether the issue could be characterised in such ways as, ‘A bad apple – or a bad barrel?’

Recorded on 11 January 2022, the debate was chaired by Louise Mullany, professor of sociolinguistics at the University of Nottingham. The panellists were Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Louisa Rolfe, the National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Violence and Public Protection; Zoe Billingham, former inspector of constabulary; Jane Monckton-Smith, professor of public protection at the University of Gloucestershire; and Sue Fish, former Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police.

Each member of this panel has presided over an epidemic of police male violence. How are any of them credible candidates to now identify solutions? Millions of pounds on salaries paid, but what improvements have been made under your leadership? You are each part of the problem.
