Dr Iain Britton is one of, maybe the foremost academic globally with insights on policing volunteers – also known as Specials or Auxiliaries. Following a distinguished UK-based career in policing governance, he was recently awarded a Churchill Fellowship to facilitate further international research into his specialist area. In this final part of a four part series of conversations for PolicingTV, he speaks with PolicingTV’s Founder, Bernard Rix about how he is helping to “realise the huge potential of volunteers in policing”, through the development of a significant evidence base in this area.

In addition to insights on police volunteering, Iain also – in this final part of a four part series of conversations for PolicingTV, he speaks with PolicingTV’s Founder, Bernard Rix, about how he is helping to “realise the huge potential of volunteers in policing”, initially focusing on policing volunteers in the Netherlands, and subsequently about his ambitions for the future of his work. “These are people who perhaps have a successful career in banking, in finance, in digital cyber, in IT and related industries and walks of life. But also a fascinating range of other specialisms – someone for example who had a fascinating expertise in dentistry, who was being engaged around some forensics work in policing”. “These are people who are community minded, with some interest in policing.

What the Netherlands have done is create a specialist role where those people can come in to policing”. “The success of that model was not only how those people were integrated… but also how this model [makes use of] them in their professional context”.
