As part of a week’s filming for PolicingTV with Suffolk Constabulary, the Roads and Armed Policing Team’s (RAPT) Inspector Gary Miller spoke to PolicingTV’s Founder and Publisher, Bernard Rix, at Force Headquarters near Ipswich.
The conversation starts with Gary telling us about his career to date. He started as a PC in 2006 in Newmarket, then progressed to Sergeant in 2010, and promoted to a role as an Ipswich-based Inspector in 2014. He joined RAPT as its Inspector in 2018. “My passion [was] Roads and Armed Policing, and that’s where I wanted to progress to, and I was fortunate enough to come in as an Inspector on the team, a real bonus for me”.
Insp Miller then explains more about the collaboration in this area with Norfolk Constabulary. “Rather than just staying within our county boundaries and having limited resources… you have the resources of a whole other team you can draw on in both forces… it allows us to be more flexible in how we deliver our service to the public.”
Gary talks about some of the work that he and his team have undertaken, and more generally undertake day to day. “The RAPT team deal with the highest threat incidents, provide that response to some of the real critical incidents that occur within either of our counties.” He gives details of the Firearms team responsibilities, and those of the Traffic team.
Finally, Insp Miller provides us with a guided tour of one of the force’s Traffic vehicles. “All of our roads policing vehicles are equipped with ANPR [Automatic Number Plate Recognition]… in a matter of microseconds it comes up that there’s a hit on the vehicle, and it enables the officer to look at the marker and decide how most appropriately they’re going to deal with it.”
