As part of a week’s filming for PolicingTV with Suffolk Constabulary, the force’s Citizens in Policing lead, Karen Harris BEM, spoke to PolicingTV’s Tom Gaymor, at Force Headquarters near Ipswich.

Citizens in Policing is, as Karen tells us, “the umbrella term for all of the voluntary sectors within policing, so it’s a nationally recognised model, and it represents the Special Constabulary, the Police Support Volunteers, and the Police Cadets, so really really important strands of our policing family”.

Karen then tells us about the Police Cadets: “From the age of thirteen up to the age of eighteen, our young people have the capability of applying to become a police cadet… it’s fantastic for them, it gives them a really good understanding of policing… in Suffolk, some of our units are fire and police… they get inputs from our drugs team, our dog handlers, and it also has an educational value and a fun value”.

On the Special Constabulary, Karen remarks that “we have around 120 Specials at the moment, we’re looking for more, we’re always looking to recruit… it’s an amazing service, they really support our regular police officers”.

“I’m so grateful, and so humbled to work with these amazing people, I often say I’ve got the best role in Suffolk Constabulary because I get to work with these amazing people, and they are absolutely fantastic.”
