Police Scotland Youth Volunteers (PSYV) is a national programme giving 13–17-year-olds the chance to volunteer alongside officers, support their communities, and learn about policing from the inside. In this interview, Dr Iain Britton speaks with Sgt Aaron Chadha, who leads on governance and oversight for PSYV, about how the scheme works and why it matters.

They explore how PSYV strengthens relationships between young people and the police, the program’s structure, its impact on community engagement, and the personal growth of youth volunteers. The conversation also highlights what major events and charities do the PSYV cover, how volunteers support local policing, and why inclusivity and youth voice are built into the programme – including a commitment that at least 25% of volunteers come from vulnerable backgrounds.
