In a series of Webinars over the early summer we heard from a wide range of industry experts on the challenges and opportunities that AI can bring the Justice & Police Sectors. In this second part from our first webinar we hear from Dr Eric Halford, former Detective Chief Inspector and now Assistant Professor, Policing and Security Program from the Rabdan Academy on the Transformer Led Policing Model. A framework for integrating General Purpose Artificial Intelligence.
Dr Eric discusses the framework for integrating general purpose artificial intelligence (AI) in policing. Eric introduces himself as a researcher with a background in evidence-based policing and highlights his focus on studying the implementation of technology in policing. He explains the concept of general purpose AI and its potential applications in law enforcement.
He also discusses the risk levels associated with AI in policing according to the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act. He presents the principles outlined by the National Police Chief Council in the UK for the lawful and responsible use of AI in policing. Eric then introduces the Transformer-led policing model, which consists of three categories: device, discuss, and deploy. He explains the considerations within each category and emphasizes the importance of testing, stakeholder management, and evaluation in the successful implementation of AI in policing. The speech concludes with the need to build an evidence base and embrace general purpose AI in a consistent and empirical manner.
