This highlights package explores the West Yorkshire Police’s Race Action Plan aimed at improving policing for black communities, the integration of AI in public contact management, and the challenges of addressing violent crime, particularly domestic violence. It also highlights personal experiences of hearing loss within the police force, emphasizing the importance of cultural awareness and community engagement in policing.
On 3rd March we heard from Chief Inspector Darren Beech and Chief Constable John Robins on the West Yorkshire Police’s Race Action Plan, which aims to improve policing for black and black heritage communities. Chief Inspector Darren Beech discusses the progress made in cultural awareness training, the reduction of racial disparities in stop and search and Taser use, and the importance of community engagement.

On the 10th March we heard from Amy Watkins, the head of Pol-Ed, an innovative educational initiative developed by West Yorkshire Police to enhance the understanding of law and safety among children.

On the 12th March we heard from John Sutherland, a former chief superintendent in the Met and now an author, in conversation with Rick Muir , who shared his journey through policing, his reflections on violent crime, and the impact of politics and austerity on law enforcement.

Lastly in the first half of March we heard from Andrea Shoetan, (in conversation with May-Britt Ronnebro,) who is the interim president of the Disabled Police Association. She discussed her unique journey from being a scientist to a police officer. She also shared her various specializations within the police force, and her ongoing battle with hearing loss, which has significantly impacted her career.
