As part of a week-long visit to Suffolk Constabulary, PolicingTV’s Bernard Rix met Suffolk Constabulary’s Resource Management Unit lead, Inspector Richard Hill.
“Our [team’s primary] task is to make sure that we’ve got sufficient officers to manage daily demand, primarily on our response teams and on our Safer Neighbourhood teams.”
“We have target figures that we’re aiming to try to fulfil.”
“Over and above that, we’re then tasked with dealing with other challenges such as [covering] crime scenes, major events, football, Latitude [festival] or any other key events that take place where additional resourcing is required.”
“It’s always a balance between making sure we’ve got the ability to deal with that additional [demand] and making sure that we’ve got enough people to deal with our daily resourcing.”
“One of the big impacts on us is training…”
“We generally forecast a week’s duties a week in advance. We find that, if we try to go further than a week, so many things change.”
“Our challenge is to forward plan constantly, knowing that it will be unpicked, and then plug the gaps. That’s our typical week!”
“We plan as best we can – and then we replan!”
