Searching for Answers: Balancing Complexity and Compassion in Child Death Investigation
The death of a child starts a multi-agency process that aims to provide the answers desperately needed by everyone impacted by the loss of a young life. Determining whether the death of a child is the result of natural causes, or otherwise, can pose unique investigative challenges and requires a very sensitive and specialised police response.
Building on the success of our 2025 event the 2026 edition of the NPCC National Child Death Investigation Conference will again be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Stratford Upon Avon, on Tuesday 7th to Wednesday 8th July 2026. The theme of this year’s conference will be ‘searching for answers’ in the context of ever increasing complexity in investigations, and the fundamental need for compassion for all involved following a child death, whatever the cause.
The event will again bring together over 200 Senior Investigating Officers and child death lead investigators for an unmissable continued professional development opportunity. Personnel from wider law enforcement agencies and academia are also invited to attend, providing your role is relevant.
Attendees will hear from SIOs presenting a range of case studies about challenging and complex child death investigations, medical and academic experts specialising in policing, paediatric medicine and forensic science, as well as professionals from the National Crime Agency who can support and enhance these investigations.
