Thinking the Unthinkable: Contemporary Challenges in Child Death Investigation

Child death investigations pose unique and complex challenges. Whether the death is the result of natural causes or otherwise, a very sensitive and specialised investigative response is vital to finding the answers desperately needed by all impacted by the loss of a young life.

After the success of our 2021 and 2023 online conferences, the 2025 conference will return to an in-person event to be held 14 – 15 July 2025 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Stratford Upon Avon. The theme of the conference will be ‘thinking the unthinkable’, recognising the difficulties investigators face when the death of a child involves those closest to them.

The event will bring together over 200 Senior Investigating Officers (SIO) and child death lead investigators for an unmissable continued professional development opportunity. Attendees will hear from SIOs presenting a range of case studies about complex child death investigations including Operation Unison, the investigation into the death of 10-year-old Sara Sharif. Other speakers will include medical and academic experts specialising in policing, paediatric medicine and forensic science as well as professionals from the National Crime Agency who can support and enhance these investigations.

Places are limited, so be sure to register today. I look forward to you joining us.

Detective Chief Superintendent Fiona Bitters

Chair of the NPCC Homicide Working Group Child Death Sub-Group
