This workshop is a consultative forum to discuss the learning from Operation Soteria Bluestone, an innovative, Home Office funded, MOPAC hosted, transformation programme aimed to improve the investigation of rape and sexual assault. The police-academic collaboration builds on the learning from Project Bluestone, a pathfinder project now undergoing integration into Avon and Somerset Police. Four additional deep dives using the methodology devised for Avon and Somerset have been completed. Operation Soteria Bluestone has identified clear learnings and supported improvements to the police’s overall response to Violence Against Women and Girls.

We are pleased to announce that the workshop will include:

Professor Betsy Stanko, Senior advisor and co-academic lead for Operation Soteria Bluestone

Lizzie Peters, Head of Programme Management for Operation Soteria Bluestone

Parm Sandhu Former Chief Superintendent specialising in VAWG who will facilitate the workshop discussion.

Feedback from the workshop will be used at the International Policing Conference ‘Policing in 21st Century – Renewing Confidence in Public Protection’ in September 2022 as the framework to develop plans for action. The workshop will produce potential solutions to police service challenges and identify those activities which we can present to develop a rounded, integrated plan, for the development of policing. We will consider:

What are the Issues for Violence Against Women and Girls and what is the next step?
Learning from Operation Soteria Bluestone: what change is required to improve police investigation of rape and other sexual assault?
How does policing take forward the three pillars from this innovative report?
Build trust and confidence; Relentless perpetrator pursuit; Safer spaces
