A non-VRU response to serious violence in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

Tue, 11 October, 10:30 – 12:30 BST

Ahead of the Serious Violence Duty, this online event brings together partners from Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and crime and justice consultancy, Crest Advisory, to look at tackling serious violence from a non-Violence Reduction Unit perspective.

This webinar, hosted by Devon and Cornwall’s Serious Violence Prevention Programme and Crest Advisory, will explore how the area has developed their own approach which can serve as a blueprint to non-VRU areas in how to structure and lead a violence prevention approach. It will also present an opportunity for all partners interested in the journey to building a violence prevention programme to take part in a discussion and consider the impact of the Serious Violence Duty on the landscape.

This event will take place Online via Zoom on Tuesday 11th October at 10:30am

The session will include the following speakers:

Alison Hernandez – Police and Crime Commissioner, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
Harvey Redgrave – Chief Executive of Crest Advisory
Becky Skellett – Programme Director of Serious Violence, Devon and Cornwall Police and OPCC
The Chair and other speakers from the Home Office, Crest Advisory and Cornwall Council will be announced at a later date.

We’d be delighted to have you join us for this discussion.

Background

The Serious Violence Duty presents a unique opportunity for local public sector agencies to come together as a system to address the root causes of violence, not just its symptoms.

Whilst there are 18 Violence Reduction Units (not including the recent additions of Cleveland and Humberside) across the country whose high levels of youth and knife related violence has generated central government investment, we ask ourselves, where should areas start in developing a whole-system approach to violence prevention?

Last year, Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly launched a new preventative approach to violence jointly led by the Chief Constable and the Police and Crime Commissioner which can serve as a blueprint to non-VRU areas in how to structure and lead a violence prevention approach and the challenges and pitfalls to avoid.

With a £1m per annum budget, Devon and Cornwall’s “Serious Violence Prevention Programme” has developed a public health approach to prevent and tackle the forms of violence most evident across the region and within their communities with the support and partnership of Crest Advisory. The programme has a particular focus on young people under 25 who are most at risk and has three central objectives that focus on people, partners, and places.

This webinar hosted by Crest Advisory and the OPCC and Devon and Cornwall Police will present an opportunity for all partners interested in the journey to building a violence prevention programme to find out more, specifically:

The benefits and challenges in delivering joint police and OPCC programme
How the programme has engaged and set up governance with key system partners
The journey to setting up a strategy, from a strategic needs assessment through to a theory of change
How the Serious Violence Duty impacts the approach taken to date
Audience: The webinar is free and open to all interested attendees but will be of particular benefit to strategic leaders from across the statutory agencies named in the Serious Violence Duty.

Timings/ access: The event will be held on Zoom and will take place from 10:30-12:30 on Tuesday 19th July.
